Thank you for your interest. I *DID* have a /etc/default/gru file, but during an update it must have been removed. This causes havok until I discovered that and manually created the file.
I do not have Debian installed on any partition, so that is a wrong guess. I am attaching the output from: * apt-cache policy grub-pc * apt-cache policy grub-efi-amd64 As requested.
