Public bug reported: was running ubuntu 14.04.1, with gnome (cinnamon installed over gnome about year and half ago) graphics card is Nvidia Corp GF108 [GeForce GT620] rev a1 with the nvidia 304 driver
Responded to upgrade manager prompt to upgrade to ubuntu 16/04.1 After checking found that most folks with Nvidia problems had them in June/July 2016, so figured problems had been resolved. (Boy, was I wrong!) Have spent the the last 5-days 8-10 hours a day, trying to recover from this badly packaged upgrade. It took two days to get "past" the inability to logon at all, and was finally able to make use of ctl- alt-F3 to get a terminal session during the logon loop problem of lightdm and Nvidia video drivers after trying damn near every NVIDIA video driver since 304. This was done using ppa:graphics-drivers and always doing a "sudo apt- get-purge nvida-*" before the "sudo apt-get install nvidia-xxx". Initially I tried nvidia-367 and it did not work. Eventually, however, the nvidia 367.35 did work with gdm3, but not with lightdm. I do not understand why Nemo is "not installed" as that was the software package that I used the most (other then "apt-get" and "dpkg") during my tty debugging sessions, once I could actually establish a tty session. Amongst many other changes that was made while trying to resolve the entire upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04.1 Gnome, was that I installed cinnamon 3 and then uninstalled it... ...this eliminated a lot of wierd error messages. (Sorry, don't remember what they were.) Eventually I installed gnome 3.20 using its special ppa and when that did not work, I did a new install of "gnome" and "gnome-shell". After I did yet another "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3" and for the first time in 5-days I was able to logon with a Graphics Manager. Upon login, I received a message that the "nemo 2.8.6-2" installation had failed, and thus this ticket... If anybody wants to try and figure out what the original root cause for the ubuntu 16.04.1 gnome installation failure really was, please list what command output and or logs you would like to see and I will be glad to attach them to this ticket. While I am knowledgable and comfortable with Linux, I am not an expert. (I retired 10-years ago from a lifetime of supporting very large IBM Mainframes at multiple locations and networking them with many, many different minicomputer and microcomputer hardware systems and their respective operating systems in both workstation and server configurations.)
