My car use the protocol Hands-Free (HFP) 1.0 (or higher). Wikipedia says: Currently in version 1.7, this is commonly used to allow car hands-free kits to communicate with mobile phones in the car. Version 1.7 adds indicator support to report such things as headset battery level.
