seems like the problem has gone away with our upgraded kernel...

however I'll just answer your q in case the problem shows up again, or
for anyone else who is interested:

You can use "wpa_supplicant" to start daemon. -B is for background
-I is for interface. You have to create a conf file based on your local AP 
settings. I have attached a sample file I used for my ap.
wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -Dwext -B
