I've come up with a workaround to this bug.

After having searched for whatever it is you are searching for, search
for something that is unlikely to be found in there. For instance,
searching for :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: or
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" is highly unlikely to return
any results and the highlighting goes away.

Hope this helps until a proper bugfix.
