Something looks wrong with your Python installation. From
DpkgTerminalLog.txt:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site.py", line 68, in <module>
    import os
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/os.py", line 49, in <module>
    import posixpath as path
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/posixpath.py", line 1
    /.
    ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

This should not happen unless some random junk got into the posixpath
library. Try reinstalling libpython2.7-minimal, which provides that
library: apt-get --reinstall libpython2.7-minimal

** Changed in: variety (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Incomplete
