Happened to me after upgrading from 15.10 to 16.04. "broken pipe", can't boot. Intel graphics. Problem occurs only if boot with Upstart (Systemd doesn't suffer) ! It seems like there are rase conditions somewhere because after all day of unsuccessful battle it's turned out that sometimes system just boots normally, but sometimes not..
