Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk

I have started displayconfig-gtk via "System"/"Administration"/"Screens
and Graphics" on an up-to-date Gutsy. After entering my password I got
the main dialog where I have left the "Screen 1" unchanged and in the
"Screen 2" I selected "Generic 1024x786 flat panel", "1024x768", "60Hz",
"Secondary screen", and "Mirror default screen". This should make the
projector on the external VGA connector displaying the same screen
content as the internal display of the laptop.

I logged out and logged in again to activate the changes, but X did not
come back. After waiting some time Bulletproof X kicked in and asked me
whether I want to enter some kind of fallback mode and reconfigure. I
accepted and got back the displayconfig-gtk window in front of a black
background. It was set to VESA now. I switched back to "i810" and set
the configurations of the two screens as before. Then I clicked "Test"
and I got switched to the log in screen. After logging in I started
displayconfig-gtk again and saw that the second screen was disabled and
set to 640x480 which means that my settings were not correctly saved
again (Ichecked also /etc/X11/xorg.conf).
