I have had a comparable problem since edgy. I used to have an ide and 2 sata disks. Booting was done from the sata, which in the grub menu should be hd0, but is marked as hd1. Nowadays i only have the sata disks. The ide channels are used for dvd drives. Whenever i install a new kernel it consistently writes the wrong hd parameter. Also the splash image for grub has the wrong hd number. It is annoying
