Public bug reported: Straightforward upgrade. 14.04LTS desktop system (x86-64) was in a valid state, with updating working and all updates applied. Answered "Yes" to the prompt to upgrade to 16.04 LTS. Let that run. Failed with dialog box "Could not calculate the upgrade", with no additional useful information.
Looking at the logs shows a huge number of "Broken" packages, many of which are internal to Ubuntu, so that's not helpful. Did the "ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core" thing to create this bug report, so the detailed logs should be attached. (There's a vast amount of contradictory advice on line at "askubuntu" about this, with no good, non-drastic answers. This should Just Work.)
