Note there are two Debian bugs, which are both marked as fixed since package 
version 1:3.16.2-1:

However, this does not seem to be the case. The upstream bug is
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=741939, but that bug has been
"FIXED" by introducing a workaround in the code, which enforces bright
theme on gucharmap instead of actually making use of the theme's colors.
I wouldn't call that a fix though.
