That indeed looks suspicious.  I've been talking with our libc team.  It
appears that the existing patch that provides for disabling lock elision
dynamically isn't present in the libc on Ubuntu 16.04, which is very
unfortunate.  They are thinking about other possible solutions.

This seems a very possible culprit as lock elision is not present on the
other configurations where you've seen success, to my knowledge.

We may need to get a special test build of glibc with --disable-lock-
elision for you to test with.  I will ask the Ubuntu toolchain team
whether this is a possibility.

Thanks for persevering through the valgrind concerns to get to this
clue!
