At the moment I bypass it by scaling (increasing) the resolution of the
output device via "xrandr". This works fine, but it costs more
performance and is not persistent at the cost of running a script after
each login.

So if X does not support the window scaling (and probably never will),
then the control panel could support resolution upscaling.

By the way: The unity control panel does not support scaled output
devices. It displays in the display position view the real output
resolution, but not the scaled one.
