I'm seeing the same issue with Kodi crashing in the same manner on
startup, with the same resolution (package downgrade).

This may be related to an internal Nvidia bug ID: 1835736

This is referenced here:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/968892/geforce-7300le-with-304-132-glxinfo-fails-now-with-quot-x-error-of-failed-request-badvalue-quot-/?offset=22

and here:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/974456/f24-permission-problems-/

Either way, in case anyone comes across this issue and wants a
workaround:

# First downgrade to the previous good version of the Nvidia driver.
sudo apt install nvidia-304=304.131-0ubuntu3

# Next hold all related packages so they're not auto upgraded.
sudo aptitude hold nvidia-opencl-icd-304 nvidia-current nvidia-304
nvidia-304-dev nvidia-304-updates nvidia-304-updates-dev libcuda1-304

# Now reboot.
# When the issue is resolved in the repositories, unhold the packages by:
sudo aptitude unhold nvidia-opencl-icd-304 nvidia-current nvidia-304
nvidia-304-dev nvidia-304-updates nvidia-304-updates-dev libcuda1-304
