I have the same problem (audio playback very quiet) on my Thinkpad X60. First, I made sure the mic was enabled per http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/12/05/fixing-the-errant-microphone/ Then I fired up audacity and recorded a test phrase. It showed up loud and clear, but when I clicked play, it played back far too quietly.
