I've since discovered my main issue was lack of support for NVIDIA
GeForce GTX 960M Graphics during the install process. Googling the issue
I found adding nomodeset in grub after quiet splash allowed the install
to proceed and not hang at the start or the end. The issue was probably
a genuine corruption of the USB stick. Every time I got to the point of
install completion (when this disk error did not occur) the process
would hang after the "remove media" request. So I was removing the USB
stick with possibly it still mounted and active. I would then try the
install again. I've probably completed +20 install attempts before the
last successful one using "nomodeset" and the "erase disk and install
Ubuntu" option.
