Slows down and hangs seem to be two different problems. My mashines never hang 
but "slow down" when copying thousands of different files. I found an 
interesting answer here:

1'st answer from izx > reason 2, that You can see in my photo. After 3 hours of 
copying files I copied 29,4GB from 38,7GB but ONLY 20460 from 69502 files. If 
there is a problem that deserves a bug report then there is one with estimating 
the real time.
At first system showed me 4 hours, then decreased to 2, the last hour lasted 
110 minutes. Copying itself (this screenshot was taken on 2016 but from Ubuntu 
12.04) is very reliable I'd say if only USB drive is reliable.
