Claudio, would you mind posting an Xorg log file from when its crashing.
I don't have that chip, so haven't tested it myself.

For extra information, can you enable the following option in the Xorg
config file's "device" section for the video card:

        Option "ModeDebug" "true"

>From the fact you were using 915 resolution, I presume you've got a
1400x1050 display?

Is it definatly the same symptom yous see, with the grey blocks? There
might be more than one bug at work here.

If you're seeing a difference in behaviour after a successful reboot
from gnome, can you additionally send xorg logs from:

Xorg after a full power down (no need to make it crash)
Xorg after a reboot (in the condition you find works).

I'm wondering if the BIOS is programming the video chip differently in
those cases, and might be able to see from those logs with the ModeDebug
option turned on.
