Okay, I have some updates. I tried installing a big bunch of OpenGL games through Add/Remove and, in the process, ended up getting a different libcurl3 that Warsow likes. So now I can run the latest Warsow binaries from the website just fine, demonstrating that this is a bug with the Ubuntu package and not with upstream Warsow.
Second, I learned that many OpenGL games do not work on this machine. Warsow does, but most end up with garbled video output or extremely slow FPS. Yuck. Feisty handled OpenGL games much, much better!
