Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this
particular problem?

I upgraded from 14.04. There was no problem

kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please
test the latest v4.10 kernel[0].

Yes, I tested it. There was the same problem. Then I found that my
/proc/cpuinfo missed the pae flag. I cleared the apt database and got a
clean update. After that my /proc/cpuinfo missed the flag again.

After any update with the Ubuntu update assistant the flag is missed
again. Now I changed the /etc/default/grub, added forcepae --forcepae to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="forcepae --forcepae", update grub and
everything is fine. I am waiting for the next kernel update now.

For the moment, the problem seams fixed.

Please mark this problem as solved - I don't know how to do that.
