I was never using ring while having the problem, so for me it can't really be the ring. I experimented with different setups as well and I get the same effect always. With less effects enabled, "normal" in the appearance dialog for instance, it just takes longer to fill my memory.
So if it's not the plug-ins, could it be the way compiz interacts with the nvidia driver, or just driver. I sort of get the feeling that in the same situations where I used to start getting black windows, my memory now starts filling up.
