According to http://blog.snort.org/2017/02/snort-2976-is-approaching.html the End of Life (EOL) for Snort version 2.9.7.6's ruleset is approaching on March 13th. But 16.04 still has snort 2.9.7.0! Ubuntu have to provide fresh snort!
