Do you have any alsa/pulseaudio config?

This can be quickly verified by running "vanilla" Ubuntu.

16.04: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xenial/daily-live/current/
17.04: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

If both of them work, then it's probably related to your config setting.
