I am not sure what else i should have installed.

I want to use the current go 1.8 release and I took the (as i think)
appropriate meta-package, i.e golang-1.8.

$ apt list --installed | grep golang

WARNING: apt does not have a stable CLI interface. Use with caution in
scripts.

golang-1.8/zesty,zesty,now 1.8.1-1ubuntu1 all [installed]
golang-1.8-doc/zesty,zesty,now 1.8.1-1ubuntu1 all [installed,automatic]
golang-1.8-go/zesty,now 1.8.1-1ubuntu1 amd64 [installed]
golang-1.8-race-detector-runtime/zesty,now 0.0+svn285455-0ubuntu1 amd64
[installed,automatic]
golang-1.8-src/zesty,now 1.8.1-1ubuntu1 amd64 [installed,automatic]
