Public bug reported:

My initrd in recent kernels is 4x larger than in slightly older kernels,
making /boot just large enough. It seems unlikely this growth is
intended:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 44052519 May 13 12:29 initrd.img-4.10.0-19-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 44050984 May 13 12:28 initrd.img-4.10.0-20-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 44054896 May 20 11:59 initrd.img-4.10.0-21-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10767900 May 13 12:29 initrd.img-4.2.0-16-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10767780 May 13 12:29 initrd.img-4.8.0-26-generic

so that's an extra 34MB for each image.

I'll try unpacking them later to figure out where they went - but I
guess it could be anywhere between the kernel and the initrd-tools
