I had slow slow boot time and no splash screen after installing ubuntu 7.10 on an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad R51. The screen was black for at least 3 minutes before I got to the login screen. I followed the steps you outlined:
- edit the file: /etc/usplash.conf - change the resolution inside the conf file by mine (it was 1280x1024, i put 1024x768 (ok i have an old pc...)) - run: sudo update-initramfs -u Now it is working fine! Booting in around 35 seconds with the splash screen. Thanks a lot.
