I think the problem might be that I've managed to install a version of
libc6 that is too new (I have libc6 2.6.1-1+b1). I installed this for a
program I was using, but would be ok reverting to either the feisty fawn
or gutsy gibbon versions (both of which are older), but I can't get
synaptic to let me do it since it thinks it will bust everything.

Any ideas? Looking at gutsy gibbon, it looks like it is a 2.6.1 level
and so I expect everything would be ok if I used it (and the only thing
that should bust would be the program I upgraded for - and that would be
ok).
