My guess: I have some backup scripts that run periodically (via crontab). (I wrote them because the version control plugin didn't work correctly, for me at least). Perhaps there's a locking problem if certain zim actions occur while a backup is running. Will try to gather evidence.
A side note: while older zim versions didn't hang, the git repository got corrupted. Ultimately had to re-create it by cloning from my 'backup'.
