Notmuch upstream and Debian maintainer here.

I can't duplicate this problem in Debian, with emacs24 24.5+1-11 and
elpa-notmuch 0.23.7-3 (note in DpkgTerminalLog.txt the same failure
occurs for emacs24 and emacs25).  In particular I don't have any of the
compilation warnings that are shown on Ubuntu.

Looking at one example warning, notmuch-user-emails is defined in
notmuch-lib.el, which is required on line 26 of notmuch-address.el, so
on the face of it that first warning doesn't make much sense, unless
there is some old version of notmuch-lib.el(c) in the load path (pre
notmuch 0.21, at a guess)
