Running Mint 18.1 Cinnamon 64-bit. My system has been running for a
while but today I hit this same problem, the menu would not respond to
the mouse and neither did the toolbar icons.

>From something in an earlier post I changed Nvidea driver and now it all
works again.]

Available drivers are -
nvidea-375 this is the one recommended but I know this causes VirtualBox to
crash the whole machine.
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau this one does not work with Virtual Box
nvidea-304 this is the one I was using
nvidea-340 I have changed to this one and all seems well now

I have no idea what triggered the problem, must be an update today I
guess. Looking at history todays updates were

archdetect-deb (1.117ubuntu2.1) to 1.117ubuntu2.2
libepoxy0 (1.3.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.1) to 1.3.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.2
kpartx (0.5.0+git1.656f8865-5ubuntu2.4) to 0.5.0+git1.656f8865-5ubuntu2.5
kpartx-boot (0.5.0+git1.656f8865-5ubuntu2.4) to 0.5.0+git1.656f8865-5ubuntu2.5

so I guess it was one of these.
