$ sudo apt install youtube-dl Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done youtube-dl is already the newest version (2016.02.22-1). 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. As listed on the main page for this package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/youtube-dl the version distributed with each Ubuntu release is approximately the version available when the distro was released. This is a grave mistake. YouTube constantly updates their website and youtube-dl must be updated to account for this. As it stands right now, you are distributing non-functional packages to the users of non-the- very-most-recent Ubuntu releases, such as the latest LTS, 16.04. Meaning, 3/4 of the time out of all times the package is outdated. ** Affects: youtube-dl (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1704368 Title: The youtube-dl packages are outdated for most Ubuntu versions To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/youtube-dl/+bug/1704368/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
