I have this issue on Gutsy64 with an on-board sound card from the nforce4 chipset, and I just wanted to add an interesting detail to this report: With two instances of the Volume Applet, they are not synchronized in when they appear mute. So i can play with the volume, and one applet turns mute, but the other does not. It doesn't matter which applet I use to control the volume.
