Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Two days ago I upgraded my feisty to gutsy. I had some problems with the update tool which crashed and couldn't proceed inside X. I killed the server and worked in console. After the first reboot there still were a lot of packages to install. I marked them for install and applied. Everything ok, but at the first restart after Grub menu: black screen, no keyboard, no mouse. To be more precise I saw a blinking " _ " on the top left corner of the screen, no booting messages. The machine appears to be working, I can hear the disk, but cannot interact. I started the with the recovery console and couldn't obtain a working X, but I could use the keyboard to kill it and try again with other configs. I did a big amount of tests on xorg.conf, with a clean one too, I read the ati 9250 bugreports on launchpad.net, tried disabling dri, and every other suggestion, but still nothing happens. I downgraded Xorg to feisty, and could start X from the console. Being sure to have defeated the bastard I restarted the machine, and had the same problem. If I start the server from the recovery console it works well, but if I exit the console, keyboard stops working, so I am running my system by the recovery console and cannot kill it. I'm really confused by what to do, I'm not really sure the problem is in "xserver-xorg-video-ati" but that is implied for sure. I can go on this way until a solution is found, but I thought this report could be useful. I'm available for tests, but I think I'll do them in a virtual machine... Silly me I haven't kept any log before downgrading Xorg, I had a look to xorg log and there were no errors.
