@terry69lawson and other frustrated users: perhaps you are in a position to try *WireGuard* as a replacement for OpenVPN (or for other methods of connecting to a VPN). Your VPN provider will need to have WireGuard servers for this to work. If your provider does have such servers, then you are in luck, for not only does Wireguard work with the latest (unfixed) Network Manager, it's also fast and easy. Still, it's also still in development and, though it has had some testing and had good reviews, it is not guaranteed secure.
Still, I am amazed and boggled that Canonical has not fixed the problem. Perhaps it's been fixed in a newer version of Ubuntu and not backported?
