So... I previously reported that this bug got fixed for me in 16.04. I was wrong.
The bug is still present and now only shows up once or twice a day causing a small skip when reproducing audio. Headphones weren't plugged in. Previously it popped up at least once in a couple of minutes so I incorrectly assumed it got fixed: it just got harder to reproduce... at least for me. My report on 17.04 could also be incorrect. The workaround I posted in comment #20 still works.
