I found that commenting out
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="$GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT nomdmonddf
nomdmonisw" alone didnt work, nor that with update-initramfs.

My fix:
comment out: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="$GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT nomdmonddf
nomdmonisw"
and then append "nodmraid" to /etc/grub/default

If you comment out those grub options alone the OS still wants to use
dmraid because it detects an imsm signature.

The other option is #15's answer.
