Thanks bam, You're right, it's not fixed. Whenever I restart Ubuntu it's a gamble as sometimes the system beep works and sometimes it doesn't. The 'beep' command always works, and when using virtual consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F6) the system beep always works, though the pitch seems higher.
