I can verify that the system hangs terribly in this situation. I do not know the cause, nor did I attempt to change to a differant tty.
I can tell you, however, that Kubuntu does not have this problem in the least. I am operaing a Dell Dimension 2400 right now running Kubuntu Live, and everything is running excitingly smoothly.
