I decided to try the alternative download. I first tried usb-creator- kde, but that app hung up and never gave an error message. So, I decided to use UNetBootLoader and, very interestingly, it hung up at 41% disk copying the iso file to the usb. My install always fails at 39%. The sha256SUM checked out correctly.
