I have a Dell D630 Latitude laptop plugged into a Dell PR01X port replicator/dock station. I have been struggling with this problem, too. I solved my problem by changing the configuration in "Pulse Audio Volume Control" from "Analog Duplex" to "Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Analog Stereo Input". Playback through the audio headphone jack in the dock station works.
