All, I downloaded the most recent iso version using the "complete list of download locations" and pulled a bittorrent version dated 18 October (if you check the date of the automated download system, you'll find the iso date is earlier than the 18th.
Make a long story short. Reinstalling the latest downloaded iso resolved this and related problems.
