Solution in post 294 fixed the problem on our (many) Lenovo G40-30
laptops. Everything back to normal. Right now, I am installing another
distro (Peppermint 8) until Ubuntu 17.10 iso is fixed.

Million thanks to those who fixed the issue without the need for any
hardware repair or replacement.

To those who say that it doesn't work, please check that the new kernel
is installed without any errors. I had to go through the process twice.
