Public bug reported:
Purged GNOME.desktop with 'apt purge gnome.desktop', thinking it was not
necessary for Ubuntu 17.10.
Saw XSESSION list. No ubuntu.desktop in it. Only plasma.desktop from Kubuntu
desktop install.
Installed GNOME.desktop to restore Ubuntu with 'apt install gnome.desktop'.
Dit some editing in Grub-Customizer.
Rebooted PC twice to test Grub settings.
After last reboot got this error.
