Depends on version you are using...

If you have gnome-flashback 3.18+ then XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP should be set by:
/usr/libexec/gnome-flashback-metacity

But at least my install does not include required part. If you are
manually starting session then you are responsible for setting required
things. That env is set by display manager normally.

XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP:
