Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hal
USB printer access is moving from the usblp kernel module to libusb. For example HPLIP uses libusb in its "hp" and "hpfax" CUPS backends. It even decouples the HP printers from the usblp kernel module which makes HAL assuming that the printers get disconnected or are simply not connected and this leads to HAL-triggered printer administration actions not being done correctly, automatic print queue does not take place and queues for HP printers are not disabled with the printer turned off and enabled with the printer turned on. Also CUPS itself is moving to using libusb for its "usb" backend. See this presentation from the OpenPrinting Summit last September: https://www.linux-foundation.org/images/3/33/AppleCUPS.pdf To avoid any problems arising from the mix of using libusb for printing and the kernel module usblp for discovery via HAL I suggest that HAL also should use libusb for discovery and identification of printers. ** Affects: hal (Ubuntu) Importance: Wishlist Status: Triaged ** Changed in: hal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Wishlist Status: New => Triaged -- HAL should recognize and identify printers via libusb https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157067 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
