Matt, I fail to see how this is strictly NVIDIA's fault. Many of the people who have commented on this bug (including myself) had working Compiz setups in Feisty, and they have now regressed to an unusable state in Gutsy.
I was running the exact same NVIDIA driver (100.14.19) in Feisty as I am in Gutsy. Compiz worked in Feisty, Compiz blows in Gutsy. To me, that's a regression on the Ubuntu/Compiz side. The black window bug had a workaround: compiz --use-copy.
