You have to be in text mode for the kernel panic to display. e.g. press Ctrl-Alt-F1. I tested this on Feisty, but I now have a broadband internet connection so I don't need to use a dial-up modem. I do still have the modem and dialup account, so I'll try reproducing it on Gutsy.
