I had the same problem, most often the trigger was opening evince for a .ps or .pdf document. It's one of the things done when I have already a lot of applications open.
As Paul (pantoine) describes, I happen to use my menu also in a vertical manner! That's I guess no coincidence. I have it now at the bottom again, and its back to normal now.
