This is probably the same problem I encountered, although the update- manager failed and exited so I can't report any additional output. One bit of data that might be useful is that I'm upgrading a 7.04 Kubuntu system running under the Xubuntu desktop. Previously I installed a number of font packages trying to get acceptable fonts for my PDFs.
