Yes, I'm 99.95% sure the problem is in the general fragility of GCJ
running Azureus. It was never meant to be done, never supported by
upstream, and tends to break whenever you don't rub it in the right
direction. On Edgy/Feisty it worked as long as you don't breathe too
hard on your computer while Azureus is running, but the long-term
correct solution for this problem is to introduce a proper Java stack in
Feisty.

The gutsy backport deb posted in bug 57875 runs on Edgy/Feisty without a
problem, only you will need to install a Sun Java environment for it to
be happy (i.e. it's technically a Multiverse package in terms of Feisty)
